Default Air Intake hose

So for some time now the nipple on the resonator portion on my air intake pipe has been broken off. The I had always intended on replacing it and did so today. But instead of using the direct replacement part I used one for a 2006 XJ8 ( AIR TUBE for 2006 Jaguar XJ8|XR849472 ), that does not have the resonator. Besides looking cleaner its less than half the cost of the direct replacement.

That's nice Don - the link you have though shows a resonator on the intake (?).

Do you notice any sound change? more intake noise? (I wouldn't be opposed to that)

oh, I see, they just show an intake with a resonator, but in the notes it says without SC without resonator.

good find!

So Don, have you noticed any change in the intake sound since this install?
any flat spots in the power or anything strange?

The resonator plays an important role as a Helmholz resonator in assisting airflow into the throttle body, and dampening control pressure wave harmonics.

Keep us mere non S/C XJ owners informed on you finding on the intake pipe it certainly looks a lot cleaner
I can access my belts easier as well for inspection

well yes, possibly as needed...or maybe it's not. why did jaguar get rid of it? it's the same V8 I believe? No updates that would change things.

I've seen them used to get rid of an intake noise or resonance for NVH issues, which is why I wondered if the original poster noticed any changes.

I'm not convinced it is a true Helmholtz-pattern, but in any case, seen to be NEEDED only because sumthin' ELSE was allowed to be pushed into a sub-optimal corner of the envelope. Fortunately, that didn't last 'forever'. Online sources show the straight one as fitting many other 4.2's - basically ALL 4.2 from 2006 to 2009, 'base' through VDP, both NA and SC.

Besides better sight of hose clamp-area condition, and one fewer plastic band-aid to break, shedding the resonator should make periodic air-filter access one notch less tedious.

Thank you, Don. New one is now on my 'round tuit' list, and I can refrain from surgery on the original so as to easily reverse the experiment if it dasn't suit my 2005 Normally Aspirated.

Try "Change Vehicle". Setting in 2005 XJ8-L get the pic of it w/o the resonator and the message "Make sure this part fits your vehicle".

Update: Actually, it seems the foto displayed automagically cycles between the two versions..

Cheap enough value-add that I am willing to risk it, even though 2005's are NOT on the cross-ref list...

*if someone does need a new one and wants the resonator, I just saw one on eBay (new) for about the same price; like $67 or something.

I actually sliced my resonator off the other day and sealed it up nice and tight. There is definitely more intake noise and more throttle response, even in this super hot weather we've been having lately. The engine sounds healthier.

Since installing the intake elbow I've not had any problems nor did I notice addition noise. Maybe a bit better throttle response and gas mileage on average is the same.
