Interesting Tidbit on NAV System
Something I found interesting that when I used the tunnels in Baltimore the NAV system still worked. I was expecting to see no updates due to a loss of signal. My Waze application just stopped working when I went into the tunnels however.
Yes. The car will use its travel distance and compass to mitigate when sat signal is losses. You will see a blue icon on the corner of the screen when there is no sat signal. This method is not accurate but enough to keep you going in right track. This is something I would notice driving in circles down in the large parking structure where I used to live. I was impressed by how it would still know location but would sometimes be slightly off.
There's a tunnel on I49 here in Arkansas that we drive through now and then and our Magellan GPSs always lost signal and reverted to a turn list in the tunnel, but the SV8s nav doesn't change at all. I'll try to remember to look for that blue icon the next time.
Blue Icon?
In mine if you go in a tunnel or underground garage a little icon appears which is a satellite with a line through it. Still keeps track of where you are though.
There are four things that the factory nav has going for it.
1. It looks good, properly integrated into the dash.
2. It keeps track of where you are if there's no satellite signal.
3. It gives you guidance in the instrument cluster.
4. You can use the JaguarVoice for some things which is a nice touch.
Apart from that, a $100 TomTom or Navman makes it look like crap.
But you have to remember that the tech in the factory Nav first appeared in 2001, in the X-Type, so it's quite an antique in that sense.

Funny story. When I first noticed the SAT icon I tried pressing it thinking it was a hidden button. 😂

Jaguar NAV in the U.S. was first introduced in the S-Type (MY 2000) as a CD based system with 9 different Compact Discs for the different regions in North America. It worked pretty well for it's day. I chose the British woman's voice when testing it on my PDI drive.
The DVD version was introduced in the X-Type as Cambo stated. One DVD for the upper part of North America made more sense.
