How exactly do you get the top bolt out of the Power Steering pump so you can remove the timing chain cover on a 2006 XJ8L. This thing is killing me. It was already stripped and I think I going to be force to cut it off unless someone here has a trick. HELP PLEASE!!

If memory serves you should be able to use a small 1/4" ratchet to get at the 4 bolts. If you loosen the engine mount bolts you can get some more room by lifting the engine. Factory procedure is to use an engine lifting device; using a floor jack is NOT factory procedure but worked fine for me.

Are you doing full timing replacement?

 

I re-read your post about getting "the top bolt out" -- just FYI more than the top bolt has to come out; unfortunately both brackets behind the power steering pump and the AC compressor have to come out. There's like 15-16 bolts in total. It was the part of the head gasket job that I cursed the most at. The cover should have been designed differently, it adds a lot of time to the job.

timing cover on the XK8 is a 5 minute job and all the accessories stay in place

I found the manual to be relatively good at describing the timing component replacement procedure. The specialty tools (crank pulley hold down, timing tools) are very useful and in the case of timing tools critical (there are versions of these tools on eBay). I also found a cheap $30 eBay endoscope (with wifi camera to a smart phone) was very helpful in removing the crank pulley as it's a bit hard to get the tool holes lined up just right with the crank pulley. My crank pulley would not budge until I used six feet of pipe on the breaker bar... crazy torque.

 

I have a leak from my timing cover. Not even bothering at this point. It keeps my metal parts nice and sheen...
