Default Help with gearshift interlock solenoid

Our 97 XJ6 just started making a louder than normal clicking from the gearshift interlock solenoid whenever the brake is applied even when car is out of park and driving. I switched the interlock relay with the one next to it and get the same result. Is the solenoid suppose to activate when the gearshift is out of park?

Thanks

Nope !

What prevents it from operating is the (believe it or not) "Not In Park" switch. Someone has posted pictures. It's a rather generic snap action micro-switch on the gearshift assembly

Thanks very much guys. The microswitch seemed to be intermittent so I cleaned it up and used some silicon lubricant on it and it works now. Only clicks in park. The solenoid still seems a little loud but maybe that's normal. Only had the car for a week and this problem had just popped up yesterday.

Thought it might be related to the no start situation the car has, but no. Previous owner had the starter jumped to a push button to start the car because the key, when turned to the start position, will not engage the starter. Any ideas on this problem? Would love to fix it and be able to start with the key. Have been searching the threads but can't find solution. Which relay can I swap to check starting relay? Assuming previous owned tried this before adding starting button but you never know.

Only other problem is driver's side power windows don't work. Fuses good and window motors work when jumped with hot wire. Tried a different master switch and driver's window, then would go down but not up then stopped any function after a while and left rear then stopped working. Now I can hear clicking only for window down in front and window up and down in rear.

Not sure if starter and windows are a related problem??

Thanks again

PS: what is the puck switch under the gas pedal?

I think the switch under the gas pedal that you refer to is for the automatic kick down, when rapid acceleration is required. If you press the accelerator (gas pedal) the car naturally increases in speed.
But if you need a sudden burst of speed, you simply depress the pedal fully/hard, to the floor and the gearbox/transmission, automatically downshifts, to give you greater torque and acceleration.
Useful when overtaking.

I rigged up a starter button as an emergency device when I was battling the same problem.

Does the "P" on the gearshift indicator glow red with the gearshift in "P". If not, the starter will not engage, and it's almost certainly the 'linear switch'....the rectangular module mounted to the gearshift assembly. The screws can be loosened...a little tricky....and the switch shifted for or aft to find the sweet spot where the "P" will reliably glow red with the gearshift in "P".

Cheers

Yes. "P" glows red. And starting relay checks out. Wondering if BPM has any thing to do with starting? Might explain window issues and other small electrical quarks...

Yes the BPM has everything to do with starting (cranking).

The BPM receives all the input signals (ignition switch key pos III, security module, check engine light status, gear selector position) and assuming all these check out then sends the signal to the starter relay.

Changed out body control module. No help. Didn't resolve any of the electrical glitches.

How can I test the key position III.
