Default '01 XJR Coolant Leak

I have a slow coolant leak from the water pump area. Is there a way to tell if it's coming from the bearing (assume there's a weep hole somewhere) vs the gasket (o ring?). I tried viewing the area with a mirror and flashlight but no luck - perhaps pulling the pulley would help? I replaced the water pump about 10k miles ago - forget if it was OEM or aftermarket.

There’s a weep hole but it’s also possible that the aluminum crossover pipe o rings or the large hose is dripping down on the pump.

I removed the water pump and see some evidence of corrosion across the metal gasket, so I'm pretty certain this was the source of the leak. The manual shows a large o-ring between the gasket and block, but no o-ring was present. I'm assuming only the gasket came with the pump when I replaced it, and that no o-ring was present when I removed the old pump. Can someone confirm the need for the o-ring? Some parts sources list it while others do not. Thanks.

The newer replacement pumps do NOT have the large 'O' ring in the block to seal the pump.
Jaguar changed that over a decade ago.

I put in a new water pump a couple of years ago and it came with a paper gasket. Somewhere, I forget where right now, it was recommended to spray both sides of the gasket with Permatex High Tack Spray-A-Gasket. Did that and no leaks.

Yes, most of the replacement pumps come with a gasket.
The gasket material seems to be manufacture preference.
Interesting that they fit on both the 4.0 and 4.2 engines.

I found the AC Delco pump did not leak and was readily available. Use whatever gasket (or not) that comes in the box. But, do the whole top side: stubby connector, crossover, thermostat (housing should be metal already for an R unit), hoses and belt. Same bolts, might as well wrench just once!

Probably a hose in the V. Coolant runs down the outside of hoses and fools you.

I had the blower off and replaced all hoses along with the water pump about 10k miles ago. Here's a pic of the old gasket (right) - about .01" thick metal with a raised bead around all of the ports that compresses when installed. You can see where there was leakage between the center and right chambers - not sure where the leakage was to the outside. The new gasket is .06" thick with rubber gaskets around the outside chambers. I assume I install this dry? Or should I use some gasket compound - I think I have every product Permatex makes - Ultra Black, Hylomar, Ultra Grey, The Right Stuff ... never know which to use in any given application. Appreciate any advice.

You can install it dry or with a smear of silicone.
