Transmission Dipstick
It isn't found. The fluid level is checked by removing fill plug in the right rear side of the transmission while the engine is running and the transmission is between 30 and 50 deg C. If full, fluid will trickle out. I'm not putting you on.

You'll 'almost" find a transmission fluid indicator if you buy an XJR and just purchase an indicator stick off eBay because the supercharged cars have a tube whereas an XJ8 (N/A) car doesn't. Just sayin.
Hi shekellorie,
Welcome to the Jaguar Forums! It's great to have you with us.
I am attaching a couple of documents that explain how to check the transmission fluid level and how to add more if necessary.
Also, please do visit the New Member Area - Intro a Must and post a required introduction so we can learn something about you and your Jaguar and give you a proper welcome.
Cheers,
Don

Do elaborate Daim, this sounds interesting. My level isn't quite perfect either I don't think, higher revs from cold I hear the pump starve and very occasionally when warm and taking a hard corner fast. It might just be my paranoia though because I've been hit by the ZF bomb in the past.
You're not alone Stu. I've been hit by that bomb too and am very sensitive regarding my tranny now. I'll tell you more later one
Got to work a little...

Hello all my name is Peter.
I have been looking at this forum for some time and decided to join today, an amazing informative site.
I have a 2001 Jaguar XJR, how far up the dip stick for the transmission does the fluid have to be, I used to know but since not doing it for a long time, this old memory drains at some rate.
Thank you

Hi Peter,
Welcome to the Jaguar Forums! It's great to have you with us.
If your dip stick is graduated properly, the highest line, or the line farthest from the tip of the dipstick, should represent the Maximum HOT fluid level. The dipstick should have a stop molded into the top of its plastic tip (see the diamond-shaped stops in the photos). The stop catches in the dipstick tube to prevent the tip from bottoming out in the pan. If your stick bottoms out, your fluid readings will be about 3/4" too high (thank you avos).
Note that you must check the fluid at a specific temperature, 80 degrees Celsius. And if you are using a scan tool to read the temperature, the transmission must be in Drive or Reverse or else you will be reading engine coolant temperature. See the attached TSB (thank you motorcarman).
Also important when checking the transmission fluid: park on a level surface and set the hand brake. With your foot on the brake pedal, move the gear selector lever through all the gear positions, pausing at least 3 seconds in each position: Park, Neutral, Drive, 4, 3, 2. This ensures the valve body and other passages will be filled with fluid. Now hold the lever in Drive or Reverse while monitoring the fluid temperature on your scan tool. When it reaches 80 degrees Celsius, put the selector back in Park, pull the dipstick and wipe it off, reinsert it and withdraw it again. The fluid level should be right at the Maximum HOT line or close, and under no circumstances should it be higher. Some dipsticks are marked with a range of acceptable fluid level:
Some may just be marked with a series of lines, which are not particularly helpful unless you have previously determined the calibration. The dipstick below has lines on one side, but cold and hot ranges on the other:
If there is too much fluid on the dipstick to see an accurate reading, continue to insert and withdraw the dipstick multiple times, wiping it off each time, until the fluid in the dipstick tube has been depleted so you can see a clear line of fluid on the stick. Once you have a good reading, smell the fluid - if it smells burned it should be changed, and this may indicate internal transmission damage. If the fluid level is low, use a long narrow funnel to add a little at a time, checking after each addition of a few ounces, and once full again, inspect for a leak.
The fluids approved for use in your Mercedes-Benz 5G-Tronic W5A580 / 722.6 transmission can be found at this link:
Mercedes-Benz Approved Fluids Sheet 236.14

Hi Shekellorie, I bought and installed one of these dip stick conversions. It took about 4 hrs, 5 if you count the tool mods to avoid removing part of the exhaust system.

Shekellorie never responded after his or her first post three years ago, so presumably the matter has been resolved.
On the other hand, Sundance-Kid, who posted today, has a supercharged car, which came with the Mercedes-Benz 722.6 transmission instead of the ZF 5HP24 in your normally-aspirated car. The M-B gearboxes came with a dipstick tube plugged with a cap instead of a dipstick, so they don't need the add-on kit. Here's the parts diagram showing the tube (Part 11) and cap with locking tab (Parts 9 & 10):
There was a "special tool" to be used by dealership service departments to check the fluid. This special tool was, of course, the omitted dipstick owners wished they would have received with the purchase of their very expensive Jaguars. See the attached document.
Cheers,
Don
