Hub bearings done. Still noisy, though the noise has changed.
I took a look at the information on the 4HU and as usual the factory manual is not great; the thrust bearing that takes the weight of the car from the driveshaft is the one that sits behind the solid block you have to drill and chisel to remove?
I need to get a stethoscope and poke up against the bearings to check which one's noisy. This is just a regular vwa-vwa-vwa that goes quiet on a right hand curve. Thinking the axle bearing in the diff is the culprit.
Phil
Check your muffler and make sure it's not rubbing on the axle. I had that happen to me a month ago. Apparently a clamp was loose for that rear section allowing the driver side muffler pipe to rub the axle.
I thought it was bearings and diff. Turns out it was a 2 minute fix.

Sadly I wish it was a simple fix like that. Already checked, but I sure do appreciate that heads-up.
I'm good at ploughing head first into something thinking the problem is more complex than it is...
Diagnosis: Begin!
Got the car jacked up, wedged the gas pedal down and went poke the stethoscope about. Right rear hub is noisy. Guess I'll get those on order.

Please tell me you weren't doing this with only a jack to support the car?
Considering how long you car was stood Phil, it might improve with use. Old fuel varnished up on the sender could be making it sticky & the fresh fuel around it might dissolve those deposits given a bit of time.

Yeah, I can dump some B12 into it and see if that helps.
Doesn't help though that the fuel here froths so much you get half a tank of foam and half a tank of liquid. The foam takes a while to dissipate so filling the tank fully is difficult.
I don't know if I'm getting oil in the breather because if I just pootle about, drive slow, moderate acceleration, up to 50 the car is fine.
If I do an extended higher speed run, 70 ish for ten miles or so then come to a stop the car smells very blue, burning oil for about 30 seconds. No visible smoke, but it smells. Not like hot oil on a manifold, like burning in cylinders.
If it sits and idles for a long while, then rev it- clean. Nothing. Doesn't seem like it's getting past the valves.
Oil through the breather and burning at a stop after a high speed run is a known issue?
