My car is leaking fluid from underneath the rear end. The air conditioning doesn't work so it wasn't on. I only drove the car a short distance yesterday when I noticed this after parking. It appeared to be water but don't know where the condensation would come from. Is this something I should worry about? I'm a lay person when it comes to cars. Any advice will be greatly appreciated. It was NOT coming from the muffler. The best way to discribe it is it was coming from the middle of the rear end beyond the trunk but before the rear tires. It's this little nub that looks like a nipple. Does anyone know what this is? Thank you in advance...

Be a good idea if you could post a picture of exactly what you are seeing. If I were you though, check in the spare wheel well to see if there is any water in there.

 

Thanks Jim...No water in the wheel well. Without putting it up on a rack I can't get a clear picture. This has me baffled. I will take it to my mechanic on Monday. I'm hoping that someone might know before then.

 

If it's back there and not from inside the trunk, it's probably coming from the drain in the fuel filler aperture - there's another drain on the other side of the car from the power antenna too. Raining recently or been to the car wash?

From your description, I think one of Larry's suggestions is probably the source of your water. Other possible culprits might be the rear sunroof drains in the wheel wells. Also the vent tube for battery vapors that exits from the floor of the trunk/boot. If its rubber seal has perished it will allow any water in the trunk to slosh out when the angle of the car is just right. Please check for water under the trunk carpet and let us know if you find any.

Hi Don, I checked and to my surprise the carpet was wet underneath. I drove to LA and back after my car was washed. That's a 120 miles and our weather has been hot. But the carwash appears to be the only probable cause. This is good news. Thank you!

 

Make sure you dry it all out thoroughly Gina and you should be ok.

Pull back the carpet up by the gas tank filler and check that the drain tube is still connected to the rubber gasket that surrounds the gas tank filler - on my parts car I found it disconnected and any water around the filler area ran straight in to the trunk.

Hi Larry, I just checked and it all appears to be fine and the carpet surrounding that is dry. I'm not sure where the point of entry was but next time I wash my car I will check the trunk immediately. Thanks again Larry and have a great day!
