Default tip on removing the starter on a 1987 xj6

i didn't have the appropriate ratchet setup to remove the lower starter securing bolt. it's quite a tight fit. i remembered that i had a 9/16 wrench that i cut in half for another auto repair years ago so that along with a pipe and a bottle jack and i was able to use the weight of the car to my advantage. well i know many of you probably would have loosened the bolt easier ways but hey, i never claimed to be very smart just persistent

Usually, things that are a mother require some kind of invention.

Just installed my Bosch starter last month, SAME problem. Wound up using a 3/8 drive, 8” extension. That will have your ratchet back there in transmission land. Remove the metal clip securing the transmission breather pipe(?) and move it out of the way. Then, begin the ratchet action. Worked fine.

did you pay a lot to rebuild the starter? you could have instead replaced it with the High Torque starters now being used. Very light and easier to install.

Not sure if that was a question for me, but RockAuto-$60 Bosch(reman.)SR191X. My 1984 XJ6 starts in a bout 1 second. Heavy as heck.

Use a 12" extension with a u-joint to get both starter bolts. Works on an E-type too.
