Default Engine pics

I've attached some pictures of my engine while I've got the valve covers off. Without the spaghetti maze of wires and hoses running around, it actually looks like an engine!
I've taken pictures of the common problem areas I've read about....Halfmoon seal on back of head (mine leaked) , oil banjo bolt (mine leak, the picture is the one on the sending unit), vaccum advance (frozen), timing adjustment plug (leaks).

You'd be amazed how much more room there is and how much more you can see if you bypass most of those hoses and pollution controls (Where I live, there isn't emissions regulations on vehicles prior to 96). I have a pile of "extra parts" I've taken off as I've installed the new engine on mine.

Wow! Looks great. I see you took out the A/C, I'd be lying if I said I wasn't considering doing the same thing. Removes alot of clutter and I would guess allows a little better airflow into the V of the engine withouth the pump in there.

From the "Ask me how I know" files....

In the first picture you can two wires coming out of the distributor. If the connector isn't fully seated the car will conk out 200 miles from home. With so much "stuff" piled over the connector you'll never be able to see the problem while trying to fix the car in the parking lot of an art museum. You'll give up and spend $300 to have the car towed home.

Cheers
DD

ronbros how did you make/where did you get that intake setup? similar design to a growler but the diameter looks bigger and doesn't look like it ran your $300+

made the elbows from 3" diameter 90*steel tubing ,welded to a flat plate ,cut and finsihed to the 6mm oversize throttle bodies.

tubing around $15. each , and around $20. for the air filters, K&N, 2 for clamps.

works great and low cost, give it a try, nice noise when on the throttle.

you do not need the big TBs, that cost a bit more(lot).

thx for inquiry!
Ron

I was in AutoZone autoparts store the other day and found a generic cold air intake setup that looks like it will work. It's plastic and the throttlebody mount looks like it will work nicely with only a little drilling of the plastic for the bolts. I'll post pics of it as I put it together under my "1/2 way done" thread.
God I love this stuff!

that sounds awesome jamey. When i get my next paycheck i planned on buying 2 airboxes and cutting the openings on them but if there is a legit CAI that can be used with a little modding I would much rather have it.

looking forward to it!

They were pretty inexpensive too. I don't recall the brand, but I'll post that too when I pick up the next piece.

well a new set of airboxes off ebay is like 60 for the pair. Is it similar to that?

not exactly. I'm eliminating the airboxes and attaching an adapter directly to the throttlebodies, with a 90 deg elbow and pipe going forwards to pick up the cold air. I'll probably put K&N filters on the ends. The adapter plate was about $6 and I think the elbow was $7-9.

Yes, they're modular so you can build your own in sections. Some pieces are straight, others are different angles.

90mm PVC pipe also works a treat for CAI - paint it black with a can and looks very professional. Have not done it on the XJS yet but have used this with great success on a few other cars
