Time to do the front brakes on my coupe. There are way too many choices. Prices from really cheap to over the top. Do any of you have any recommendations? No need for high-performance parts. Just need some good solid, dependable parts. Right now I'm leaning towards CENTRIC from Rock Auto. Go for the best. Just think about the cost over time. If your XJS is not a daily drive - replacing front brakes will take place once per 25 years. Also you don't want squeeeeeky sound each time you're approaching steet lights... Not sure about US brands, however pick most trusted. There are replacement pads with anti-squeeeek liners - invented long after XJS production ceased...

 

I agree, I’d go top shelf for pads and rotors, excluding anything slotted or drilled.

on my 96, I have Akebono on the rear and Pagid up front. Brembo rotors all around.

Im sure Centric has a top tier, mid grade and low end option. The difference for pads between each tier is usually only a few bucks. You basically want to decide if you prefer ceramic to semi-metallic. For rotors....not sure how to steer you.

 

FWIW....

On my various 80s-90s vintage Jags I've used rotors labeled Bendix, Lucas, Wagner, NAPA, Lockheed, Centric, Brembo, and Raybestos. I'm not a madman behind the wheel but my brakes do get a decent workout from time to time. No complaints or problems with any of them.

The best pads I've ever had were Akebono. If you can get them for both front and rear, I would suggest doing so. I wouldn't mix them with other pads, personally.

Prior to the Akebono my favorite was Raybestos PGD9M (rear, inboard brakes) and PGD135M (front). No noise, great grip, almost no dust.

Thanks for all the input. As usual, I disregarded all the suggestions (just kidding). I did a lot of looking around and decided on EBC. They match pads and rotors for every driving style from daily driver to all-out racer. We'll see how that works out. https://ebcbrakes.com/products/usa-kits/

 

EBC if you can find them...I have slotted stoptech rotors due to EBC shortage at the time, but use ebc pads absolutely worth it this is one thing you can indulge in go for the best.

I have EBC on my truck, a 650hp 14,000lb diesel beast rig and these brakes have held up considerably well even under that extreme application. Considering the difficulty in XJS rear brakes going for top shelf makes double sense so you dont need to come back.

get the red stuff. (I think red is still their top grade)

They are absolutely superb. previously I have had great problems with warping rotors, and with EBC for the last 16 years, no problems at all. Keep an eye on pad wear though.

 

I have EBC HH pads on my Triumph. They're a nice improvement from stock.
