How many people have take gas tanks out?
I have removed mine over the last 6 months, prob wont ever get it back togther, well the tank is a lil rusty but the lil tank is very flaky rusty, gonna try muratic acid to clean & hope it gets it all out,my question is where did everyone get the parts from? I having trouble with the tank filler neck o-ring & gaiter seal? I have been to several sites but they say the parts on fit 88& up or not in the righ vin # areas,my car is an 87 XJSC too so I guess thats why its harder to get the right parts
Thanks,Brian

Fuel Filter O Ring
See,my vin # is 138084 so its too early for most places ive seen,I guess because its an XJSC maybe? Ill figure it out, just found the gaitor piece, says for mine, need Oring for filler & a fuel level sensor& oring, might have to buy for XJS & see if they are the same, thanks for the help
My 92 XJS convertible had sat for years before I got it. The tank was full of rust and water. I pulled the tank and removed the fuel pump and fuel pump mount. After taping over the holes, To remove the scale, I inserted a couple dozen 1/2 hex nuts and a few gallons of kerosene. I shook and rotated the tank. I dumped the dirty kerosine and did it again. Finally I filled the tank as muck as possible with a solution of muratic acid. After a few hours of sloshing it around, I dumped it. More kerosine was sloshed and dumped to prevent furthur rusting. I used the old fuel pump mount as I could''t find a new one. A new fuel pump and sending unit were installed. A new neck O ring and gaiter also installed. Most important a new fuel filter was installed. I think I got all the new parts from Partgeek.com. I also pulled the fuel rail injectors and cleaned them, just in case.
it was £291 for the tank less 10% jdc discount, and £42 for the fitting kit, which included modified fuel pipe, + vat part # cbc55251* & cbc5525fk1

Brian,
I can't speak to the 87, but finding parts for my 89 5.3 wasn't an issue (VIN 160xxx) and were actually pretty inexpensive. I called SNG and they had to wait to get the rings in stock, but they sent me the filler neck O ring and the two gaskets for the pre filter pickup in the sump tank and the sender, they're actually the same part.
I needed to put the tank in before SNG could get the parts shipped to me so I actually went to my local Jag dealer and they had the gaskets in stock, the parts guy was quite surprised. They were only $.50 more expensive than SNG, too. Only a few bucks a piece.
My car sat for a while and had all kinds of rust in both tanks. I took mine to a local radiator shop and they used it as fill-in work to keep the price down. They ended up charging me $175 total to clean out both tanks and coat them with Redkote inside. They had to cut a couple of holes to get on the other side of the baffles, and soldered them back up when they were done. I wasn't complaining!
I hope that helps, that's my only experience with the gas tank so far. I know yours is a Convertible, but I wouldn't think that the seals would be that different? Here's what my tank looks like, for reference. A little different than the vert tanks, I know, but I can't imagine why they would use a different sender for the coupe and vert?

Took a tank off of a donor car last year and will have it for sale this winter. Had a lot of crud inside.... Sandblasted and dried out now.... Did not save hoses or lines....
