As a new owner, what is the conventional wisdom on timing chains on the V12 6.0 please? After how many miles etc are they recommended to be replaced? There are no indications of any issues but the radiator etc is out and the top of the chain is currently accessible. I/m not looking for extra work or expense but now might be the time...
My wifes PreHE -645000kms, untouched.
My HE =300000lms, untouched.
The biggest issue you will have is the Boomerang Chain Tentioner, $650 last time I looked, will need to be fiddled with. The timing cover will need to come off.
Never seen a V12 or an older XK 6cyl with chain issues, they are too heavy and strong.
You are not looking for extra work, then dont, do the cooling system, SMART MAN, and drive the thing, please.
On a separate but possibly related note, is it common to find leaks between the camshaft housing and cylinder head. Should this be resealed now or left alone (it is probably 26 years old sealant)? I have new tappet cover gaskets ready to go in.
Oil weeping between the cam blocks and the head are rare, and as Greg has mentioned, most oil suspected of being from there, is in fact from the cover gaskets and "D" seals.
To reseal those blocks to head, the chain needs messing with, remember the $650 Boomerang, probably will snap when you mess with it to allow camshaft removal.
Greg has a method of sealing them, and when the planets align, I feel sure he will share.

If you are referring to Grant's use of orange sealant to the exterior of the joint it is detailed in the link further up this thread. If there is something else it would be good to know.
