Default Back-up lights

In January I brought a 2007 XK because I thought it is just beautiful. I soon learned that only one back-up light came on so I took it to my local mechanic to have it fixed. He informed me that only the one on the right side is supposed to work. Is this true?

Yes, he is correct. The other side is a "fog" light.

Hey welcome to the forum marvedenny! Richjak is 100% on the mark. The single fog/backup remained throughout the 1st generation.

A kind hint if I may; Getting to know our search engine (and yes, I don't find it user friendly either!) will have answered your question an easy 20 times in this year alone for you.

Anyhow, still glad you found us, and hope you keep us in mind before you hand money to your mechanic. You'll find lots of knowledge here willing to make sure your Jag stays purring and maybe save you a buck or two in the process!

Lastly, please create a signature with with a minimum of your car specifics. It helps us so much when responding to you and your questions.

Beyond that, I again, offer Welcome!
Peace!
Vince

This site is definitely not user friendly. I still am not sure how I managed to post my question, let alone how to search for a topic.

Simple fix!
just replace LH fog light with UK back up unit and splice wiring into RH unit. Then people will stop bugging you about BU light out!

Cheers, Adrian

Yes, it is user friendly. You simply click 'Post New Thread'. Then you type the thread and then you Submit the thread. Why in the world is that so hard for you to comprehend?

Finding that location is the PROBLEM. It should be at the very top level; not buried under something else!

And then there's the not so simple fix, but really effective, and that is to pony up some $$ and replace your tail lights with the newer LED units, and then you will have 2 BU lights AND 2 rear fog lights. I love it every time I walk around the rear of the car!

I bought the lights from SNG Barratt, along with the wiring harness that goes between the inner lights in the trunk lid. I followed George Kale's instructions (mostly) for wiring them up (you need a couple of relays, and some resistors).
See this thread for more details:

See post #51 in that thread for a link to George's PDF file, with his excellent guide. (My post #99 of that thread has my clarification on his wiring diagram.)

Inversely, I wanted two fog lights, so I bought the RH UK fog to replace my backup light! A simple pair of diodes would let them work as both fog and backups. They are certainly bright enough!

Kj since you have upgraded the tail lights how do you feel about upgrading to the 2010/11 bumper

Right now I'm not a fan of it. Maybe it'll grow on me if I look at more photos of it, but for now I like my smaller '07 nose, seems more streamlined.

Its been growing on me big-time Im really starting to like the more modern look just thinking the 07-09 bumper is starting to date a little well at least in the n/a xk it looks quite dull and boring perhaps due to the wing emblem which screams Chrysler voyager to me !!

I guess it all depends on your point of view, my '07 n/a reminds me of this:

I'm going to keep mine awhile.
