Default Transponder fobs not working. Proximity fobs do.

When I got my car I got two FOBs. They both worked for the main stuff and had the correct emergency key to open the door. However, one was very battered and did not open the boot or turn the lights on. I kept that one in the house as a spare in case I lost the other one.
I just decided I needed to be sure my spare was still working, so tested it. Same result as before but knowing much more now about the car than I did when i first got it, this time I also tested the smart key in its slot in the centre arm rest, and it did nothing; it wasn't sucked in and didnt turn anything on or allow engine start, So I have decided to replace it.
But I then realised I had never tested the best fob in the slot either. This one was sucked in, and turned the ignition on, but did not allow the starter motor to run. I took it out and it still allows engine start on the proximity sensor so I have no immediate problem. But this is very odd behaviour, isn't it? Any ideas as to where the fault lies, please?
For peace of mind I want 2 fobs that do everything, but at the moment even the good fob doesnt do transponder starting in the slot.

Your advice please, oh knowledgeable ones.

You just need to fully insert it. It doesn't injest the Smartkey .......

Graham, thanks for replying. But as I explained, the best fob does get drawn into the holder and then turns the igition on, but doesnt allow the starter to run.To get it out takes a little push down and then it pops up and out. This all feels normal, apart from not allowing the starter to run. But the tatty old one doesnt get drawn in.

First, some GOOD NEWS. Smartkey case parts are available from Jaguar. Part numbers are:

Front (silicone mat): C2P15135 (8.42 UKP)
Back (housing): C2P17158 (11.21 UKP)
Chrome side trims (fob end cap covers): C2P15136 (16.07 UKP)

A total of 35.70 UKP. Some ebay listings are a little less; some are a lot more. Dismantling and reassembling is little more complicated than a battery change although you must take care not to press any buttons whilst the board is being swapped to the new housing.

Now some BAD NEWS. It sounds like you are inserting the Smartkey into the Starter Control Unit in exactly the correct method.

As neither are allowing the engine to start and you don't report any of the above messages, it's likely the Starter Control Unit is faulty. I can recall seeing a report of this on the forum so it's rare but not unknown.

Throwing parts at a Jaguar is never a good plan The best approach would be a diagnostic check with SDD before spending on a new or used unit but this may not be available to you.

Your X150 has 2 security systems i) a passive system that wirelessly communicates with the vehicle and ii) an active system that relies on the physical presence of the key in the start control unit SCU aka the slot. It is likely that the key which does not stay in the scu was programmed by a locksmith and will operate wirelessly but is not authenticated to the car.
I suggest you review the attached for a full explanation

Unless you are very familiar with SDD and key programming you likely need to find a jaguar tech that is who can program the keys to your car. This may entail buying a new key(s)
