A ctek can be fitted easily to the battery instead of trying that.

 

With the car closed and locked there is no power to the cigar lighter. You can use the positive terminal in the boot at the left behind the plastic grill. It is under the black large rubber cap. You can find a ground near the tail light or in the spare tire compartment. Most of us use the Ctek smart charger. There are various types of hook ups so just do a search.

 

I'd recommend the CTEK MXS 5.0 and a suitable what they call "Comfort" lead to attach to the battery/vehicle - it's all you need.

As a new member as well, I searched the forum using the search term CTEK and found great information that helped me identify and wire up a battery conditioner. The only additional information I can add is that when I initially set it up, I had the charger screwed to the garage wall. When I ran the charger it got really warm to the touch and it concerned me. I then placed a piece of ceramic til under the charger between it and the wall, which acts as a heat sink, and that fixed the issue for me.

The OP's Public Profile shows that he's in GB, but fails to include any information whatsoever about his XK. There's a difference between the 4.2L and 5.0L.

It is important to note that the CTEK leads can be wired directly to their respective battery terminals in a 4.2L or to the remote battery terminals in the boot. But because the 5.0L has a battery monitoring system attached to the negative battery terminal, you must not attach the CTEK negative lead to the negative battery terminal; instead, attach it to a chassis ground (or attach both leads to the remote battery terminals).

Most of us use CTEK brand (I have an MX 5.0). Your Jaguar Dealer can supply one branded "Jaguar" at a highly inflated cost or you can buy the same charger at a more competitive price from many other sources. Connection in the luggage compartment is the correct method either on the battery positive and nearby earth as shown below or the remote connection points next to the rear lights.



CTEK list a number of extensions with and without charge indicator lights. Jaguar recommend this location for the connector.

Does the 5 litre have the same remote terminal behind the grill as the 4.2 litre then?

 

Mine's a 4.2L, so I can't say for sure about the 5.0L, but I believe that the remote battery terminals are identical.

So, why is everyone going to the bother of fixing their trickle charger to the positive terminal of the battery rather than the remote terminal behind the grill as we do with the 4.2 litre then?

 

I would assume it's a matter of choice. I first started using the remote terminal behind the plastic grill but didn't like opening the boot each time I plugged in or unplugged. Looking for another way I mounted to the battery and to a externally mounted cigar socket. Used a waterproof marine unit and now just have to plug into it after every drive.
