Default What is this?

Hi
first time Jaguar owner and trying to learn as much as possible about the vehicle. Have a 4,2 n/a 2009 model year and try to figure out what this is as it has a small oil leak. Do I only need a seal or the hole part? Its a kind of a sensor, isn`t it?

This from the front of the left banks

The wiring loom and connector are for the inlet camshaft variable valve timing (VVT) solenoid. There is also one on Bank1 as well.

Someone asked this a few months ago, and I do believe they replaced the seal and everything was great.

Yeah, that one.
Dang, more than a year ago.
Course, "2020", so time is messed up anyway.

At that age, its typical to leak like that. When it's time to replace the valve cover gaskets and clean out the oil separators inside them, then I'll worry about those seals.

I just spray it down with throttle body cleaner every now and then and its fine.

You have a good point there gkubrak, I have cleaned the seal once and it seems that the leak is very little. Thanks again👍🏻😊

You can replace just the seal. Squeeze the electrical connector and gently pull it back to allow the seal to be replaced.

Make sure the seal is fully seated into the opening on the cam cover then reconnect the electrical connector.

Default Seal replacement

It's a two minute fix, but take your time.
Just remove the connector - Squeeze and slide towards rear. It might seem tricky but try not to force and break it!
Ease out the old seal with a flat blade and slide all the way off the vvt actuator body.
Clean around the actuator body and the hole then slide on the new seal and push it all the way down all around until it's totally flush.
Refit the connector.
Here's a source for the replacement seal ...
