Does it STAY on?

Unusual for the subset of powertrain codes that trigger the CEL not to be read by even the simplest code reader.

Sooner or later your reader will show a code. That is a few cycles of engine on and off...or cranking the engine if it isn't running. I have an older ELM 327 connected to a tablet by bluetooth and that is my experience...When I don't get a code, I have a cup of coffee or three, and try again later. Not very scientific, but it seems to work.

 

it IS scientific; well established science has proven that more coffee fixes anything.

Disconnect the battery overnight, just disconnect the neg lead. Re connect and see if the fault light comes back. Then have a cup of tea.

Disconnecting the battery will drain the capacitors that power the keep-alive memories, and you will lose all history of the diagnostic trouble code (DTC) that triggered the check engine light (CEL). This may be fine if you suspect the problem was a caused by a glitch due to low battery power, but it would be better to find a good independent shop with a high-end scan tool like an Autel MaxiSys, Launch X-431 (or the Matco-branded equivalent), some Snap-On scanners, AutoEnginuity with the Jaguar enhancement, or the Jaguar dealer-level system IDS/SDD. These diagnostic tools can read historical codes as well as current ones, assuming the memories have not been cleared.

Fairly common occurrence. Owner posts seeking assistance for an issue, finds a solution or is provided with one, implements it, and moves on without bothering to post the results and potentially help others in the same boat. Don't let it frustrate you....
