Hello all,
My XK8 rescue project is still alive. Underneath the hood (bonnet?) there is a layer of material attached. I assume this is for sound deadening? Mine has a small pocket where a woodland critter tried to make a small nest, about the size of a tennis ball. I could cut out the area and make it look tidy... but I was wondering if I could just remove the whole thing? Is it necessary for heat/moisture/etc? Or is it merely for sound deadening?
Thanks all!

Some have suggested it helps protect the paint on the top surface from heat damage. These cat converters and exhaust manifold retain a lot of heat. For my own car, I would try and repair the lining. Then again, I default to Jaguar-knows-best on most of these questions...

Whenever I see a post about liners, thoughts always turn to forum member Gonzo (Gonzales Duque) who sadly died in June 2014.

Gonzo made the best replacement liners but to my knowledge, no one has stepped up to fill the gap.

I used Mighty Mat insulation on a recent project for heat protection. This stuff is amazing. 1/4" thick is all you need for heat protection. I saw a video of a guy holding a 1" metal rod with his bare hand, using nothing but 1 wrap of this insulation for protection. The rod was then heated up cherry red, to the point of melting. I installed using 3M spray contact adhesive, and aluminum tape on the edges just for looks.

I posted on this issue last year, man how time flies behind the wheel of a fine Jaguar. The hood liner on my car was abrading the rubber supercharger intercooler coolant line. I don't know if it would've worn it all the way thru, and I don't want find out the hard way. I could've cut out the offending area, but I'm loathe to cut up an otherwise pristine factory part.
so I removed mine.all the way. The engine noise (music) is barely more audible, and the heat has not mpacted rhe paint at all. I doubted that it would, as I've had numerous high performance vintage cars that came from the factory with no hood liner. And they run much hotter than the XKR,
that was about a year ago. Since then I've driven cross country twice in trips of over 2,000 miles and put about 15.000 miles on the rear sans hood lines. No paint issues.

here's the thread I mentioned, with some photos:

in that thread I also linked a topic from 2010 where the same issue was happening.

I too recommend putting in some extra insulation. On my car, originally, if you looked sort of 'under' the top coat on the hood/bonnet you could see some mottling. Caused by the heat from the engine. I used the insulation off Ebay silver front, foam back. Just cut to size, easy. Peel off paper back and stick on.
Whilst you have the 'cover/liner' off I would repaint that too. I used just mat black spray and it looks 100% better. I actually bought a new liner and to be honest it was awful quality. Even had someone from SG Barrett come out to take a look at it. He thought my original one, I had just sprayed black again was the new one. Good thing I kept the labels on the "new one"
Take a look click me
This is my "new" replacement. Awful quality. Take a look. click me
One last thing. A sort of before/after session. My restoration of the original liner. click me
Its amazing how you forget stuff. Until I had looked up the links I had forgotten about how much work I had put in on just the liner. Though that is the reason I started my little? "Franks Story"
