Default Radio Question

I have a 99 XK8 with standard radio setup with CD Changer in trunk and no amp. I noticed there are no tweeders behind grills on dash but there is wiring for them. Can I use this use for tweeder's with this set up or do I need something else.

You need the amplifier.
Some of the wiring is there,as you have discovered, but it's not connected to anything at either end

Not to disagree with Michael, just double checking which speakers you refer too. The tweeters in the sails (triangular cover front of door window) are premium.

I could swear I once measured continuity ( zero ohms) between the speakers in the bottom of front door and the "squawkers" in the dashboard.

Maybe, to Michael's point, standard sound systems just didn't have that driver installed.

Look, I'm going from an old memory. It could be I was measuring from the tweeter to the squarker. Easy enough to check. You can remove the grill and door driver without removing the door card.

Sidebar From the guess how I know file: Just remember there's a strong magnet behind the speaker dying to suck your screwdriver through the speaker. It with do so instantly and without mercy if you get distracted! I always protect the speaker with a free hand whenever I work on its screws.

When you have access to the speaker terminals grab an ohm meter. See if the unconnected wire in the dash is connected to the door speaker.

If it is, yes you can put a tweeter in there with outrunning an additional wire.
Same idea, if it is not in the door speaker circuit, you can just tap into it for your tweeter feed.

FWIW, the factory squawker is more of an upper midrange. You will at least need a capacitor to block frequencies below the range your tweeter can handle. Tweeters usually come with a crossover, but itll be a tight fit. Better crossovers come with RCI (resistance, capacitor, inductor) filters to provide a steeper crossover , but this is a car. Doubt you'd hear the difference. The tweeter that comes on the sail with premium option is just a single capacitor.

Want to add your own capacitor crossover? Grab a calculator, here's the formula:

Capacitance in microfarads (uf) =

1/(2pi * speaker inductance in Megaohms * crossover frequency)

A 4 ohm speaker is 4/1,000,000 Megaohms.

You must select a non polar capacitor. Also called bi polar. Count on it being non-electrolytic at this size (they are almost always polarized).

Have fun...

John

Here's the comparative Standard and Premium speaker setup:

At that point I'll retire from the debate as I only turn a vehicle radio ON twice. When I buy the car to check it works and and again when I go to sell the car to make sure it still works. V8 is sufficient music for me.

Default Same car 99 XK8 base sound system - dash speakers don’t connect

Hi.

Tried this in virtually identical car. See post #12 in my thread below.

https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/x...eakers-214035/

Too fiddly to try and re-do wiring under dash. My improved door speaker upgrade was more than good enough.

David, great link. Looks like you have done all the work tests already. This sure supports Michael's note about an open wire connection in the dash.

Thanks, John

Thanks both.
I probably should have given a more complete answer.
The tweeter and dash squawker share common wiring - i.e. the two drivers are in parallel. The wiring on the base system ends at IC1 in the centre console.

Base:

Premium:

It would be possible to tap off the door speaker and run wiring up behind the 'sail' and attach a tweeter to that via a suitable capacitor.

Michael, you get the genius award tonight. What an easy solution, just tie the cable from the sail to the door speaker (in parallel)! I love it when the obvious / easy stuff is the solution .

Thanks for the approbation although I believe you suggested something similar in your first post?

I recognise that formula in its transposed form of f=1/2π√LC and the screwdriver warning also strikes a chord
