Default Somewhat Odd Issue

Wife goes to take the XK8 this morning, gets about 0.75 mile from home and she hears this loud noise coming from the right rear. She turns around, goes home.
I get home later, she tells me about the noise. Hhmmmmm.....last week I removed the RR tire as it had a screw in it, got it fixed and I put it back on....but cannot think of how that could have caused any problem. I did lift the rear end up by placing a jack under the diff.....did I crack the case somehow...all the fluid leaked out and we now have a parts car!!..???

I go out to the garage and as I am walking towards the RR I see that the RR wheel is slanted in at the top...I mean really slanted in!
Get under and see that the eccentric bolt for the toe adjust is about halfway out...the nut is gone.
It was probably two years ago that I had an alignment done.....really odd that the nut came loose after all this time.

Trip to the hardware store for a nut and washer and back together...although the toe setting is now off.

Just somewhat odd don't you think??

That is shocking and lucky there is no further damage or injury.
If the fulcrum Pin partly came out then you may have lost the shim ?
The Nut needs to be tightened to 88-118 Nm.

If there were shims on the nut side of the bolt...they are long gone.
I need to find information on these shims; how the thickness is determined and so forth....anyone have any leads for me?

I linked the JTIS R&R procedure in post #9 which should help.

The JTIS procedure does help...THANK YOU!!

Have been looking for a replacement shim.......have not found anything yet....not even a reference to one. The E34978 number comes back as nothing found.
I have found incorrect info....the eccentric shank bolt shown on the parts diagram has it an M12....the one I have is an M14.
So much for a simple fix....

Lannyl81,
Jaguar call it an 'adjustable spacer' but it is really just a thick washer.

There are various thicknesses stated on Jag drawing between 3.905 -to- 5.505mm. Many are no longer available except for the thickest one. You could buy and file down to suit.... You may find that there is a shim on the other side of the hub (some vehicles did), if so then I presume you still have, it will be the same diameter and thickness. That is your starting point. See if you have one on the other side and check for sizing.

https://parts.jaguarlandroverclassic.../brand/jaguar/ see item '#17'.

Also found this for sale. It is thinner than the median size on the list (4.355mm thick), but you could buy and try!

Both the JEPC and Heritage (it's the same diagram essentially) only show one adjustable spacer. The JTIS procedure shows one at each end, and they should both be the same thickness. The 2004 JTIS procedure mirrors the 1998 on this.

Some of them are still available:- the 3.905 mentioned in the procedure is in stock, but the cost is a 'LOL price'. I'm not sure why they need to be exactly the same thickness as long as the preload measurement is satisfied. I guess it must be something more than just symmetry and it will have only a tiny effect on rear toe.

OK!.....yes I saw the "adjustable spacers"....picture looked like it was quite large so I did not think it was the correct one.
PKWise:....that is the diagram I was looking for...could not find it....thank you.
And yes I will be seeing if there is a spacer on the other end to measure. If not, then I will do what the JTIS shows and see what it should be.
Fun times today in the garage with air temp of 107+°F today.

Thanks to all.

depending on thickness, SNG has them as special order - SNG Barratt US | HUB AND CARRIER-REAR Assembly. You may also want to check out Coventry Foundations e-bay stores as they tend to have some odd parts

HEY!!!!.....the Jaguar Gods were kind to me....for a change.....the shim was there....actually shims on both sides of the carrier....YEAH!!!
Put it back together, torqued nut to 100 N-M.
Will still need to get an alignment, but need to replace those blasted front upper shock mounts for the 2nd time. Have a set from Wayne to put on....last time I will have to do that job.

Thanks once again for the information.....once again the Forum comes to the rescue!

Btw, in the future when you post do not title your post with something that does not describe your problem or is extremely vague. I know from myself I won’t read a post unless the subject is something I know something about or it interest me. And I never post with titles such as “heres an odd problem“ or “i need help! does anybody know how to solve this?”

for the most part I always skip over any posts that don’t describe what the problem is. In fact the only reason I read this post was because number one I was bored and number two I thought I could help you out in the future if you ever have another problem and you post again.

glad you got your weird problem resolved (arent most problems weird? I know mine are!!)

At the time I did not know that I could have had a problem; loss of a shim (or shims). The RR toe eccentric bolt / nut coming loose was just an oddity to me, I did not have a problem title.
Good thing others read my posting and told me what to check.

Thanks.
