Sorry to hear that your XKR won't start. Lot's of potential reasons for it - some cheap, some more serious. We'll need a bit more information, ie what noises/conditions for the non-start, car mileage, car service history etc, to help diagnose the problem. Could be bad battery, bad starter, blocked air filter and/or bad MAF, or even no-spark.

But you've said you've sent it to the Jaguar Dealer, so of course their charges will be high. Unfortunately most dealers won't have the staff and/or equipment to deal with issues on a car almost 20 years old now. That's probably the reason for their delay, as the garage has to go back to HQ for the troubleshooting software.

Here's a link to Gus' Jagrepair.com comprehensive DIY walk through for a non- start issue.

Most forum members would agree that getting a professional garage to work on the car is probably a non-starter (pardon the pun) if you own a X100, as the charges will cost more than the car is worth in the current market.

Good luck and let us know how you get on.

Hi David i got the car out and it started but was rough and restricted proformas was on the dash so took it to jaguar who have serviced my car for the last 10 years yes main dealer
so they said it needed a coil pack so got fitted came home all ok then 2 days later it would not start would not crank just made a humming noise at front same as the other post that was on hear
so got rac out they checked all the fuses fine he got under the car and tried the starter with a direct fed i think was not looking and the starter worked so he s jested i take to a rac approved garage
which would be the first time anyone other than jaguar has worked on my car and they could not get it started so it went to jaguar and is still there i think they are waiting to get the soft wear sent
last year it had new fuel pumps fitted it has a new battery on i have done 25 miles since the coil pack was fitted it has 148,000 thousand mills on clock nothing for a engine of this size i have
2 stamped service books it has wanted for nothing had every it ever needed i do not use it as much as i should 300 miles last year i am always in my 1950 mk5 will let you know what happens

Fuel pump or battery or earths.

Just because everything lights up and car cranks over does not mean you do not have a bad earth. I found that out the hard way. If you look under the engine you will see an earthing strap. Take it off. clean everything up with sand/glass paper and try again.

Another thing to try is put the car in Neautral and try again to start up.

First mistake. You took it to Jaguar. If its not a part they cannot replace they are not interested. Should have taken it to a proper independent.

Second mistake. You assume they have done what they say, and charged your for. That too I learned the hard way.

Have a read. It might be helpful. Click me to read It might take a while to read it all but may give you some ideas.

Where abouts "UK" are you?

I wish I had the money just to throw a car away because the dealer mechanics (none of which will have any training on the XKR) can't fix it.

Now that is a very nice looking car. On a private plate too. Do me a favour next time you go out to the car give the ignition keyhole a spray of WD40 and a gently tap. Sometimes the key hole chip plays up.

I will pass on your details.

Sounds like your saying the engine will not turn over,
If so it could be starting motor problem or the engine could be locked up some how.

No doubt Jaguar dealer will let you know in time.
Jaguar independent in your area is Alan Carr Jaguar, iv used him now and then.( just google for contact details)

Good luck with getting it sorted and hopefully its a simple fix and not something more serious.

Ask them for the trouble codes and post them here. Anything to do with the immobilizer? Throwing parts in the hope of fixing things gets expensive. Ask them to demonstrate their reasoning. Show your work!

Best of luck, keep us posted.

That is truly shocking. This is why I do not use dealers. They do not fix things they replace them. Even they its not a guarantee that it will work. If it really is the barrell its more than likely the immobilizer part stuck. Hence spay with electrical cleaner first. Work key in and out a few times. Clean again. Work key 4 or 5 times. Spray it with WD40. Try. If it still does not work then leave it for a while and try again. Not forgetting the occasional light tap to shake it loose if it is stuck.

I would use powdered graphite rather than electrical contact cleaner. Much better application for the interior lock components....

The ignition switch and the ignition key cylinder are two different items and are only connected mechanically.
