After the wife drove her car approx. 3 - 4 miles on hot after the water pump let go (I can't believe she never heard a sound ), the car started "..shuddering and didn't run right".
Anyway, after replacing the water pump and the thermostat (while I'm in there) and finally started the car, my heart dropped. Ticking valves, rough running, and almost no idle. I checked for codes and they indicated 3 cylinder misfires and the P1383 & P1388.
After reading what the 2 dreadful codes are for, VVT over retard on both cylinder banks, I am actually hopeful not too much damage was actually done.
I am guessing the water pump spewing water caused electrical damage to the computer. My hope is that by doing a reflash or if there is a seperate VVT module and replacing it, that will straignten up these 2 codes, get the valves back in time and eliminate both the ticking I hear and the misfire codes.
I am willing to replace the computer if necessary but if a reflash is possible can it be done with the computer out of the car?
If it is other damage but the car runs decently, then it's time to cut cord and buy a Kia!
I doubt the water caused computer damage but if it did then a reflash will do nothing. In any case don't attempt any reflash except in situ. Only a real jag expert tech would contemplate that.
You almost for sure won't have PCM damage but if you do I'd source an identical unit only after first finding a competent jag tech (these are not common) able and willing to program it to your car - and he'll need the whole car. If you find the tech, he'll tell you what he can/can't program i.e. what to source.
JTIS has various details of VVT and how it works etc. My car doesn't have it so I just skipped that stuff
If you go through it and have detailed questions, hope for someone here to help.
BTW, you probably need a few more posts as you're a newbie - see the newbie instructions - or you'll be locked out of various data.

If you would like the most accurate assistance, it is very helpful to place your vehicle information into your signature line, just look in your member control panel to set it up. Info like year, model, engine size, and other details like mileage can only aid in receiving more replies with the correct information. (thanks, h20boy!)
A compression test should be performed to find out how much damage was done by overtemp. The misfire can be because of low compression in a few cylinders or coolant in the plug wells or electrical connectors.
good luck

Another potential issue to check is whether or not she blew the head gasket. Whenever an engine runs hot due to loss of coolant (such as a busted water pump), head gasket damage is common. Good luck....

At a guess, that's why motorcarman said what he did

jagv8, thanks for the info! As often as I get on line these days I'll probably a newbie or locked out for sometime, hey wait!!! I've been upgraded!!! I am 60yrs old and I get to be called a junior again!!! ....lol
I agree with you computer should be out of the mix. After I found out where it is I agree. Just read one of the post on vvt issue and grabbed for the ring too soon.
Just hoping it's not tto too bad but I just bought a compression tester so I will be busy in the next day or so.
Thanks motorcarman Bob.. got the compression tester and will check the next few days. I am sure I will probably find some dampness in the plug wells so checking the compression gives me the chance to clean and dry things up etc.
Hi jon89, it 'seems' that once above idle the engine runs pretty decently so I am hoping the head gaskets are still whole but you are right it's a good possibility.
Any contaminant (incl. water) in plug wells needs removing ASAP as it can cause poor running - and the coils may be permanently damaged.

Motorcarman, did the compression check using a new Actron tester finally and sure enough I have 3 dead cyclinders showing 0. passenger side of engine (going front to back), cylinders 1 & 4 show 0 but 2&3 show 148 and 149. Drivers side, cylinders 1 & 2 show 149, cylinder 3 130 and cylinder 4 0.
Can you give me an idea of what it cost for new head gaskets assuming no other damage was done? Assuming no valves were nicked or bent.
Do you know of any independent Jag tech's in the Pittsburgh, PA area I can trust?
Car is in beautiful condition body and interior wise. It has DSC fault, leaking exhaust and bad front sway bar bushings and other than all this the car ran very well and for a V8, good gas milage that is as good or better than my old 1999 Taurus V6.
I believe I just have to let 'er go now fro fear of too much $$ needed to get it all straight.
