I just checked my laptop, and it is an MSI brand, running a dual-core 2.00 ghz AMD X2 processor, 32-bit Windows7 OS. Its got to be 3-4 years old - my work computer that has since been upgraded.

Hi Cambo351
Re your faulty mongoose. Just to let you know I bought a JLR VCM from uobd2 and I could never get the thing to work so after much discussion with them, I took a leap of faith and sent it back after I'd had it for 9 months asking for a refund. They didn't give me a refund but did send me a brand new replacement which works fine. So hopefully you'll get similar treatment. Good luck.

Never before had there been such discussion on an open forum about IDS/SDD. There was one forum in the UK, kind of underground, which was blatantly talking about hacked versions and trading user credentials, but it's been shut down since end of August or so.....

I followed the site that was shut down. Posting copyright software for free download may have contributed to its demise.
While it seems unfair for JLR and other manufacturers to restrict access to diagnostics software, there are some legitimate reasons to do so. Vehicle theft and emissions tampering are two reasons that come to mind.
Then, there are us folks who want to help an aging vehicle live to become a classic, want/need affordable ownership or are compulsive do-it-yourselfers. (I'm all three.)
Thanks, Drew Tech, for dealing direct. Thanks to shops reselling their old software. And thanks to forum members, especially techs, for sharing what you know.

Best regards,
Bill

I got my mongooser and as expected, the software included with it was corrupt. So I downloaded the current version of v131 off of the Jaguar diagnostic delivery website and installed it instead. After some very thorough searching online, (and buying an invitation) I was able to authenticate the v131 off line. That is, no need to connect to the internet.

I think it is all working, I have only played with it for about an hour, so I do not know if the full capabilities of the mongooser and the v131 software are available to me.

Note: I cannot answer questions of how to get the software working or why it doesn't it do this, or how can I do that, because I don't know myself. I will have to research and read and search and try things out, to see what happens. This is the learning process, I suggest you try it too.

Now finally I got some good news this morning, the seller in China received my dead Mongoose and is shipping a replacement free-of-charge. Let's hope this one lasts a little bit longer than 4 months....

...also used the new combo to not only automatically lower the passenger mirror when in REVERSE, but also the driver's mirror! You can also enable/disable the audible chirp for the alarm too in the SDD...oh yah, plus you can enable/disable the passive arming of the security system (which I didn't do, I like to leave the key in the car as it rests in the garage). I haven't found the 'global close' option just yet, but I'm sure I will somwhere along the line if its in there. I'd like to have that turned on. I just have to remember to return it back to normal if I ever resell it.

When using V128, for example, and the diagnostics function, then EMC is selected, a "Read" option is available to support the "Run" option. Is it necessary to be on-line for the read function to work? Is the Read data on the local computer or are those files online only?

Thanks,

Bill

I got the USB elm327 to go VERY fast via (high speed) CAN, dumping all CAN bus data (via a fast USB port), so I don't think its micro type is relevant. The usual cause of slowness is that the software connecting to the elm is using ISO (which is really slow). Worse, a lot of the software uses the elm commands with various optional padding still enabled so loses yet more bandwidth.

Is there some sticky or dedicated post for "guidelines for using SDD", or "how to use IDS"? I would think that now more people are being exposed to the software, some sort of guide would help us newbies from making bad mistakes. I am not suggesting one person write up a user's manual, but if anyone wants to share their problem solving experience or tips, I think it would be help full.

Or is there already a forum or topic such as this?

Am using Win7 64 and a virtual Windows NT SP3 session. You do need Java and so far the latest Java version (iirc 7.7) is working fine for me.

Too bad Microsoft didn't get very far with selling Windows Embedded as the OS for automotive computers. It would be a walk in the park.

If you have an older computer with a single core processor, you'll need to run WinXP Pro SP2 and Internet Explorer 6. Nothing later than IE6.

If you have a dual core processor, you can use WinXP SP3. But you still need IE6.

If you have enough horsepower to handle Win7, stick with SP1 or earlier for now; and you'll need Internet Explorer 8. Only Win7 32-bit is supported, not 64-bit.

If any Java update is needed, it will tell you when an update is ready.

Hope that helps!

Some digital documents for the SDD software were generously offered to me... I haven't opened any of them yet, but at over 41MB in the zip file, there's sure to be some good information in there. Let me get the files cataloged and uploaded to the mediafire hosting site, then I'll get some links into this thread for starters. Give me a few days, I've got a crazy week at the office planned.

I am running XP Pro SP3, but not IE6. What's the newest version that'll run on XP, IE8? That'll be it. Everything seems to work OK, the only thing is that SDD takes over IE and you lose the tabbed browsing. Also noticed that it's messed with Windows Explorer i've lost the forward, back & up buttons.

I had a machine auto update to XP SP3 once, it made a superbly working unit kind of herky-jerky. Pissed me off. Had to remove SDD completely, uninstall SP3 and reinstall the then current SDD version.

IE 8......same thing. Company IT people took it upon themselves to update machines to IE 8 without consulting us. Problems ensued. I had to remove IE 8 and reinstall IE 6 on all machines that had SDD. They have been fine since.

As far as SDD taking over Internet Explorer......get used to it on these machines, can't get away from it. I just install Firefox to use for any browsing I need to do other than TOPIx.

Word of caution, DO NOT install Google Chrome on any SDD machine. Chrome takes over some settings even worse than SDD does with IE. Everything from Google has tentacles, I hate it.

Vista?? Kick it to the curb if you want to do diagnostics, period.

Cheers,

+1 I found this out the hardway, its now banned at our office (cause I always had to fix what google chrome screwed up!) and I warned my family that I won't be fixing any more chrome-installed machines anymore. We'll see if the short memory returns.
