TBS?

If you mean TPS then I believe the PCM will throw codes, use a default value, run rich and risk destroying your cats if you do it for long. But at leaat it should get you home rather than refuse to run.

I think you get a limp mode with No TPS since it cant find the butterfly position.

That's really poor, isn't it? It can get very close to correct engine control from MAF, trimmed by O2s, using MAP, and being careful to use KSs. At least, I think it can.

That is what I thought, cannot line up with the throttle so throw the limp mode.

So what would cause the hunting and surging? I will try to pull codes tonight.

Thanks

Once the ECU isn't in control anymore over the TB, it will indeed go into limp mode, and then control the engine rpm via the fuel injectors. In idle position the TB will let in too much air, and the only way to keep the rpm low is then to limit fuel injection. This causes the hunt/surging, so normal operation.

Oh! How horrible!!

I am now working on the basis that this is with BOTH the TPS and the throttle body's motor (i.e. butterfly actuator) disconnected. I'd thought just the former was meant.

I'm a little surprised that when the actuator is disconnected the throttle butterfly is part (or fully) open, but the car would go nowhere due to having no air otherwise, so again I suppose it must be this way.

Thanks for explaining.

I ordered a new TPS from USAUTOPARTS.NET (part number W0133-1655464 $175.00 with free shipping) which arrived a day later.

Downside; it was a used part that arrived. It seems someone in the warehouse decided to swap the part out before it shipped. Thankfully, one phone call later, another one was dispatched.

That one arrived this afternoon and was promptly fitted this evening. 1 cable connector, 2 screws, five minutes of time and all was completed.

She runs like a dream again

Seems I spoke too soon. Dreaded Failsafe came on and then the mil. TPS Sensor again. Apart from the accelerator pedal can anyone offer a suggestion?

Bob,
Sorry about that. My mind was elsewhere!

The DTC is P1584 Throttle Control Unit Input Circuit Malfunction.
Thanks.

That doesn't look to be the Jaguar details for that code. Get them from JTIS (may also be in the FAQs and/or Gus's site). You want to be looking at the right info!

OK it seems I was wrong about P1584 Bring the Throttle Control Unit Input Circuit Malfunction.

P1584 is actually TCU Detected IPE Circuit Malfunction. Can anyone decipher this for me please?

You need the code from the way I told you. Really. Do yourself a favour and get it that way.

BTW, you need JTIS no matter what if you're going to do even the slightest amount of DIY.
