Default Engine making metalic clanging 2 days after purchase

Well bought this 4.0 with 100k miles 2 days ago. I turned it off after driving, tried to start it later, wouldn’t crank/turn over. I figured it was a dead battery so charged the battery then tried to start it and this nasty noise came from the engine… I have attached the video of the noise it made.

Yes you need a few more posts before the forum will let you attach stuff.
Are you aware of the timing tensioners/chain issues?
Have they been replaced? It's pretty normal for the 4.0L so plan to replace all of it. Now let's hope the engine did not jump time or the pistons will smash into the valves which will be an expensive fix.

Now the biggest question is can you DIY any of the repairs?
We have complete repair procedures on the forum to do the repair and it is a big job for a DIY guy but the car is not worth much so the cost at a shop will be too expensive and I would not want any shop doing this UNLESS they have done it before.

Do you have any local independent Jaguar repair shops near by?

Before going any further, remove the cam covers and inspect the cam timing.

Use the 24mm crankshaft bolt to rotate the engine in a clock direction ONLY when viewed from the front of the vehicle. See if the flat spots on the cam shafts are both facing up together on each bank. If not, the secondary timing chain has skipped. The AJ28 can jump a maximum of three teeth on the secondary timing chain before the exhaust valves are struck by the pistons.

The forum search function can help you find threads on this topic as it's been discussed many times before.

That noise does definitely not sound good - plus, it actually sounds like some metal part fell of at the end of your recording...

It certainly sounds like a good idea to check (as NBCat suggested) after removing the cam covers, if the flat spot are aligning. Also shine a torch into the front (where covers are removed) to check, if you see the timing chain tensioners and see, how they are. I think the S-Type V8 used the same engine as the XJ8, and the XJ8 has a problem with unsuitable OE Bakelite (plastic) timing chain tensioners. I am not sure, if that is also an S-Type issue.

Anyway the Jaguar V8 is an interference engine, as NBCat pointed out above, i.e. the pistons and the valves are population the same space - just not at the same time, IF the timing is correct. If the timing is out quite a bit, the pistons and the valve ARE populating the SAME SPACE at the SAME TIME... and the valves will loose out in that fight and be crushed.

Depending which laws apply - contact the seller...

E.g. UK, bought from garage, their problem. Don't disassemble yourself!
