It was recommended by ford for the 5r55n transmission. I've just seen others on here saying that they have installed it, but no mention of size.

The poster seems to know what he's talking about, so I trust it.
Edit: You commented on that thread, so I assume you're familiar with the contents. I don't believe the poster is on this forum any longer though, so I don't think he would answer a message.

The use of supplementary filtering can be found on many forums that are less inhibited about exploring alternatives than JF. Magnefine is just one of the possible solutions.
But, the OP is not mistaken that the Magnefine is recommended by at least one OEM as part of a repair procedure. The specific Magnefine part number is identified as being mandatory for certain automatic transmission repairs in the factory documentation.
Since these are often warranty repairs, no doubt the factory has determined that the extra cost is necessary and warranted.

I don't install them but the others are correct. It's very common to see this recommendation after doing any transmission work. Jaguar/Ford even has this is some TSB's.
I don't think it will hurt but I don't install them for several reasons.
They are an add on so more places to leak.
Not much room in the S Type to install it.
As posted above not really needed. We have a filter built into the pan.

True and I have seen this too. But there are a number of other TSB's and other things that had the filter recomendation.
But notice your dates stop at 2010. I wonder if Ford is still saying this?
I just did not want to cut into my cooler lines. Worried too much about leaks. Same as Ford I guess.

The key point is that the filters were intended to be installed after transmission replacement where there was a concern that debris could still be present from the failed transmission. The bulletin rescinds that practice.
I can't find any current recommendation that they be installed with either replacement or original transmissions.
