1jagman,

Please see my reply to your Intro.

If you confirm which model Sovereign you have, I'll move this question to the right section.

Graham

All I know is that it is an xj6 Soveriegn. How do I go about confirming any other identifying numbers/ models of this vehicle?

There will be a "factory build plate" on the car, usually on the LH inner wing (our RHD cars), and that will give the build date and other information.

Being as you say a 1990 XJ6, I am going to "guess" it has a single windscreen wiper???????, if so, it is what is known as an XJ40, and Graham can move this to the XJ40 area, where answers to your query will be thick and fast.

As to this query from my perspective.

I do not believe that your year model has cabin filters, maybe your market did get them, but I seriously doubt it. My 1996 X300 does not have them.

There are 2 (TWO) fans and motors, one each side of the inner sanctom of the climate control system. Easy to get at HAHAHAHA, and they do fail with good old fashioned "old age". It is quite common for one fan only to be running.

Lots of write ups in the XJ40 section on this, and the remove and replace procedure is also in there somewhere.

The XJ6 Series III is a rounded design and has twin windscreen wipers:

The XJ40 has a more square appearance and has a single wiper:

Following Grant's advice to check for the "factory build plate" is a more technical approach!

When you confirm which it is, I'll move the thread to the right section.

Good one Graham.

Pictures speak a thousand words.

I reckon since his is an XJ6???, it should NOT be a S3, as the post '87ish were only V12 monsters.

Time will tell when the answer arrives.

Time for a "nectar of the Gods", HAHAHA.

My car has square headlights, a 4.0 6 cylinder engine, single blade windshield wiper, so maybe it is an xj40.Will check tomorrow morning.

As sure as my fresh bottle of Canadian Club will be empty before the night is out, YOU GOT AN XJ40, congratulations.

Graham can now weave his "magic".

Let's hope we get a solution to your restricted air flow now.

Righto.

Forget the cabin filters, coz I still reckon you no got them.

Air flow via the vents on the XJ40 was a hit and miss, and IF you have only one fan working that will be the prime cause. Turn on the system, set the fan speed on HIGH, reach under the dash on each side and "feel" the A/C unit housings. You should "feel" the fan "vibration" on each side as EVEN. If the "vibration" appears stronger on one side, then the other side fan is possibly not working.

I have NEVER had them out, only what I have read here in the archives, but it is apparently not a nice task.

Check the fuses, the XJ40 has a HUGE amount of fuses for all sorts of things, and maybe the RH and LH fan are on a seperate fuse, dunno????.

The system also has "stepper motors" that control the various flaps inside the thing, and if one or more of them is hissy, then airflow may be compromised.

The only hands on I have had was my daughters '87 3.6ltr waaay back, and one fan was slower than the other, but a strong "scientific" kick fixed it then and it still works fine today.
