To replace th alternator or not is the question

Looks like someone forgot to tighten one of the alt bolts. This is how I found it after removing the compressor. Also notice the shaved/ground metal on the topside of this alt. What could have cause that? Makes me wonder if I should replace the alt since a good part of it is exposed. I believe it to be functioning properly but if I leave it and it fails at a later date then I think I would have to remove the compressor so I can remove the alt. Is my thinking correct? If so, I'll replace it now. Thanks for your opinion in advance.
OTH, with respect to the opposing view.
1. Ham handed PO busted the boss by forcing the bolt that was cross threaded. Ugly, but it's job of securing the case s seem OK.
I suspect the nut that is not run down is cross threaded , But, perhaps it's shrouded position was a PITa to the PO and he left it that way. Ugly, but seems to work
So, if it charges OK, keep it.
Or if you really want an alternator with a higher output, good excuse.. Ifm you need SWMBO OK, you have the evidence...

I agree with Greg.
I wouldn't be so concerned about whatever is exposed or how it looks as I would that the threads for the screw holding the thing together properly have been seriously compromised. No telling where/if cracks in that casting may be.
Also, given that you have removed the compressor anyway, you might as well get a new Alt. now "while you're at it" and you won't have to worry about it later.

wow the aluminium casing was cracked too! What kind of neandarthal would treat a part like that?
man, the bolt looks in the wrong direction too! Bolt should come in from the outside.

New ??/ Where??? An asian version? Not bad. My car has an asian starter. it seems just fine.
Even the AC Delco that Bill cites is probably a reman.
Same with original Lucas. New not for decades. Unless you luck out and find one on a dusty shelf some place/
Were I to opt to replace, I would choose the Delco. Should you need one in the middleof no place one willbe available.
