Default XJS Gear Selector sticking

Many times the gear selector of my 1995 XJS gets stuck in park and will not shift. If I pump the brake enough and work the shifter will eventually go into gear. Anyone have this happen and know how to repair it.

BruceVT,

Very possible that it's the brake pedal switch that is not allowing the signal. Failing that, the rotary switch could be the reason. IME, very unlikely that it's the shift selector itself.

Start by looking at the brake pedal switch continuity, Could just be a loose wire.

Cheers

Paul

The solenoid for the Park release is under your shifter console (ski slope) at the very front. In an emergency, you could remove the ski slope and operate the release mechanism. My 95 occasionally does the same thing so let us know if you figure it out.

That’s great information. I have removed the wooden panel but I do not see anything at the front. Do I need to remove the entire console to access it. I really appreciate all of your help.

When it works, you should be able to hear the solenoid under the panel forward of the gear shift handle at the front edge of the panel. You do not have to remove the console.

So helpful!!! Thank you so much. I hope that it is the problem because I am 70 and not as limber as I used to be to get under to the brake pedal switch. I keep forgetting that it has been 25 years since I restored my E-Type.
