Default Airbag Reset

Removed drivers airbag today due to clock spring replacement now have a permanent airbag light.
Do I need to get the lamp reset. Or will it clear on its own

Hi,

Did you remove the battery connections before removing the air bags, if not this can trigger the light and you would need a dealer to reset it as far as I know. The reason I say this is in another thread I needed to replace my alarm sounder as I thought it was faulty and to do so you need to remove the bonnet air bag and had the same problem as I did not disconnect the battery. As I could not reset using the JLR SDD software I 'worked around' my issue by wiring in a resistor now I don't have the light on. You would not want to do this on the steering wheel air bag though as it would be like a bullet being fired at your face should it ever be deployed.

Others may know how to reset it, I personally would also love to know how to reset any without having to go to a main *******

Thanks for the reply. It was possible that I had the battery connected without the airbag connected.
I planned not to but I needed to move the steering so needed to reconnect the battery. So could need to get it reset via a dealer or buy a reset tool

Are reset tools the same for any car make as I have an old BMW reset tool

Hi,

I use the specific JLR SDD software diagnostics with a mongoose cable can do most things with that as it is Jaguars own but I cannot reset the air bags. I can say not tried anything like an Autel tool, I have a foxwell but no Jag software on it. My work around to reset was a resistor these I wired in (one of them anyway) https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/375786853331 they plug these in when working on the systems. I think you might have a dealer or indy visit to egt it reset unless any others out there know a way.

There's over 80 DTC's for the SRS system. What codes are you seeing?

Yes I know there are a lot of codes and I don’t have a code reader
I took the car into my Indi due to a very intermittent airbag lamp.
It was looking like it was possibly the clock spring . I didn’t get a code .
So I changed the clock spring and since I have a permanent airbag lamp.

Looks like I will have to take it into my Indi again

Thanks for replying.
The question was really would I get a permanent airbag lamp if airbag was disconnected when battery was connected

Generally I know it's a bad idea to touch airbag components while they're energised. So I would say there is a good chance that you've tripped something in the system.

First thing to try for electrical issues is a Hard Reset, as per Jaguar.
Disconnect both battery terminals and touch them together for several seconds, AVOIDING THE BATTERY POSTS at all costs! Really quite easy. Then do any resets, such as window travel, maybe parking brake...

Thanks for the reply Cee Jay

I tried a hard reset this morning and still the permanent airbag light.
So I believe that either the drivers airbag has gone faulty whilst changing the clock spring or it needs resetting via a SRS reset tool
I will take it to my Indi this week.

Thanks again

Give this a try first. Certainly cheaper than a service technician. It will reset the SRS among other things.

Amazon Amazon

Thanks Sean for the suggestion. On UK Amazon this product is discounted to £57. I paid last week to have the SRS message read £45
I know that’s for a one off but I looked at the product info and it’s being able to read SRS message but not clearing them .

sure if you're looking for a one and done service. Anyway, yes it is supposed to clear SRS. Hope it works out.

I had an SRS light on one time upon purchase of a car and found out that some previous repair guy had forgot to plug back in the SRS seat connector at the base. Once connected it went off on its own with no issue. This would have simulated an open circuit. Also had the same thing when replacing a pretensioner on a different car. The light went off immediately after replacement. I would venture to guess that any SRS device replacement would not require a hard SRS module reset and should reset itself after replacement.

You could be correct.
It’s going into my Indi tomorrow. It could be that the drivers airbag connection hasn’t seated properly or airbag gone faulty or just a reset required.

I will update this thread when I know.
I could take the airbag off again and reseat the plugs but was such a faff getting it off in the first place that I am going for a reset first.

Thanks for your reply

Update: FIXED
Took the car to my Indi on Friday and he put his scanner /code reader on.
It showed 2 faults and it proved to be the new clock spring that I had fitted was faulty.
He removed the clock spring and I returned it to SNG Barrett and had a replacement sent out .
There was no problem doing this and got the return postage refunded.
Replacement arrived today and the Indi fitted it as the car was still had steering wheel and airbag off

Apart from getting the connector from the main loom under the dash to sit properly at the back of the clock spring it all worked OK .
It needed an SRS scanner to clear the airbag lamp.
Cost was reasonable £70 for the pattern part clock spring ( Jaguar part was £224 )and £140 labour at the Indi.

All working at the moment and hopefully it’s now fixed. Time will Tell

I now have LEDs lit on the steering wheel buttons which I am pretty sure I didn’t have before and hadn’t noticed

Thanks for following through with an end result! Interesting that it required a local electronic reset to get the airbag light to go off. I have had many SRS modules erased with a hard EPROM reset after accidents but have never had to have a local reset after a device replacement. I would be very interested if any of the electronics gurus on the board here could tell me more about what type of event differentiation requires manual reset versus automatic reset.

I had a BMW 3 series a few years ago and it had a passenger seat air.bag fault. It needed a SRS scanner to clear the airbag lamp.
I eventually bought a SRS reset tool which I still have. To save having to keep going to the dealer to clear
I did ask on an earlier post whether it was likely to work on a Jag
