Put the key in the boot opening slot next to the XK8 sign at the rear. Should open the boot.

Default If that doesn’t work, check out Nickjag7 post

If you don’t have a master key to open the trunk, check out other options in Nickjag7’s recent thread. Link below.

Good luck.

BTW, this is a more than common problem. Our cars are often put in storage and the battery dies. Keys get lost. So some members have created inventive ways to dangle an emergency pull wire under the car to open the trunk

Welcome to the forums playmesa,

That's taking the challenge to a new level!

With the battery OUT the vehicle, you can't use the method of powering from another battery connected to the engine bay terminals to energise the circuit as it is incomplete. The only solution is the keyway in the luggage compartment lid which is a direct mechanical link to the lock.

You don't mention Coupe or Convertible but the locking mechanism is the same and neither have access from the passenger compartment through the rear firewall to the luggage compartment.

The Lock (item 1) is normally opened by the electrical Actuator (item 3) pulling the Cable (item 2). The alternative of the keyway is physically rotating the Lock Barrel (item 4) pull the second Cable (item 5) to open the Lock (item 1).

If the Lock Barrel is seized and cannot be rotated, a more destructive method would have to be considered.

When you get a minute, please follow this link New Member Area - Intro a MUST - Jaguar Forums - Jaguar Enthusiasts Forum to the New Member Area - Intro a MUST forum and post some information about yourself and your vehicle for all members to see. In return you'll get a proper welcome and some useful advice about posting to the forum.

Lets hope he has kept the rear boot/trunk key hole lubricated.

A 'Frank Tip' when ever I am disconnecting or removing the battery I get a towel. Double it over. Put it between the lock and the lid of the boot/trunk. Do it out of habit and it avoids these situations. I have also used the battery cover but that is more obvious to passers by that the trunk is open.

I also place an old towel over the lower latch area. Well worth the effort in case the trunk lid decides to close on its own.

I'm not sure I agree with that. The addition of a power source under the bonnet completes the circuit again, so should work fine.

But you have the potential of creating a short if the +ve terminal is touching the chassis or the -ve terminal.

This is true... ^^^^
If one can get under the bonnet.

They are not hard cars to break into when push comes to shove, anyways. Especially the convertible cars...

Indeed, but that could be easily checked by testing for continuity between the -ve and +ve terminals under the bonnet. If there is no continuity, there is no short.

Absolutely, the key is the best solution though.

Well said! Good idea. I'm terrible with electrical stuff...

I think sometimes we could all do with the benefit of hindsight.

I tried the key in the key hole in the boot/trunk and the darn thing would not turn. So I decided to fix it. Take a look at this topic, it even has a pretty video to watch Click me to jump to topic

Hope it helps someone.

I've posted this in similar threads, if the car is a coupe with the "premium" sound system, pull the subwoofer, you'll have full access to the trunk.
