Default dimmed outside mirrors?

Does the 2001/X100 had dimming outside-mirros?
Mine doesn't have and I wonder wether they are not working or not existing. Mine re also not electrically folding-in. Was that a combined option? Thanks
Daniel

The best way to check is quite easy. Does your interior mirror have an on/off button with a red light?

If it has then the answer is probably yes.

Yes but with a green light when its on.
But the door-mirrors does not dimm and I wonder wether they are not working or non-dimming mirrors are fitted. As they also are not electrically foldable I asked wether it was a combined option (electric foldable & dimming)

I don't recall any dimming outside mirrors and have never heard of them as such. The folding mirrors are an option

Mine does have auto dimming mirrors. 2003 XKR.

The way to test. Get yourself a bright torch. Feel behind the interior mirror for a hole. Thats the light sensor. Put a finger over it to block out the light, the mirror now thinks its night time. Then get your torch and shine it through the hole in the Front of the mirror. The mirror thinks its car headlights. The interior and both outside mirrors should darken after about 30 seconds to a min.

If nothing else the interior mirror should dim.

Give it a go and let us know.

The sensor is working as the inside-mirror darken but not the outside mirrors.

I wonder who has dimming outside mirrors maybe in combination with el. folding.

My 2001 XJR has also inside and outside (electrachrome) mirrors which darken. The outside are el. foldable.

Mine has!

I have a 2003 XKR.

So your sensors are working. At least you know you have the function.

Your next mission, if you chose to accept it, is to remove at least one of the mirrors. It either comes off easy or you will be swearing at it for ages.

Removal procedure.

Outside mirror in front of you. Lets do the Left one first. So mirror in front of you.

Take something that is fairly wide. You dont want to put too much pressure on one point as you may crack mirror.

So slide a thin bit of wood or plastic removal tool into the right side, nearest the car.

Put pressure on the tool to try and make the mirror slide towards the left, away from the car.

At the same time put another tool on the opposite side, again a wide tool to stop you damaging mirror. This time your trying to lever the mirror outwards towards you.

The emphasis though should be getting the mirror to move from right to left. You should feel it move. It sort of 'bounces' sideways.

It has very fine clearances and there really is a nack to pulling/levering it out as you push to the left.

As I said before some come out really easy some are pigs. Behind the mirror is a 1-2" strip that goes into a raised slot at the back. So your trying to pry it out of the side of the slot and pull it forward as soon as it does.

So when/if you get the mirror out take a look at the back. You SHOULD have three wires connected. If you only have two you have a cheapo replacement. If you have three connected then you have a faulty mirror. If there are actually only two wires behind there then its not designed for auto dim mirrors.

I also assume you have put the ignition on. Put the mirror selection bar to the middle. Given the 'joystick' a brief tug backwards to check you have or have not got folding mirrors too?

Thanks frankc and all others. No i did not have the opportunity to test the above procedure. I hoped to find out without dismounting the doors about my mirrors. But I will do so in the next week.
