ECM Vs. PCM
A PCM or powertrain control module is different from an ECM or engine or electronic control module, even though most people believe the two are the same. Most modern or newer models only have a PCM, which controls all the engine functions, where the ECM only controlled certain parts of the engine.
Terminology is funny sometimes. Like people who use dementia and Alzheimers interchangeably. Dementia is a SYMPTOM of Alzheimers. Not all dementia is Alzheimer caused, although it's about 85%. Think of dementia is a cough, a SYMPTOM of the underlying cause that causes it.

Jaguar/Ford refers to the PCM as a POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE.
The S-Type (when introduced) was a Ford thing and Ford did NOT want to pay licensing for a CAN bus.
They created a PTEC (PowerTrain Electronic Control) to contain the ECM/TCM in ONE unit and used a Ford gearbox (5R55N).
The acronym PCM refers to a combination ECM/TCM (covering the entire Engine/Transmission POWERTRAIN). No network is necessary because BOTH are controlled by a single unit!!
The introduction of the MY2002.5 S-Type did use a CAN bus because the ZF6HP26 needed one!!!!
X200 uses a PCM and the X202 uses a separate ECM/TCM.
As far as I know, the X200 was the ONLY Jaguar model to refer to the module as a PCM.
Hope this helps to clear things a little.

For this car I think you can use PCM & ECM as the same.
I believe PCM is a more standard term.
Cars are required to provide OBD via CAN nowadays (er, since 2006/2008 or so, depends a bit on jurisdiction) so it was just a matter of time on that.
