With my transmission, which is different from yours, it was not until I removed the starter bolts that I had success.

I was told that the starter bolts did not need to be taken out but they sure did!

There are a couple of dowels halfway up either side which can rust but they were not really a concern I did spray with Pb Blaster.

John,

Thx for the response. After seeing your post I took a look at the starter. It does not look like its involved but I'm gonna take another look. Did your starter mounting bolts go through the mounting flange and into the bell housing? Did the starter drive gear somehow catch on the flywheel? Now that you mention it, It feels like resistance is coming from that area. I will PB blast the dowels and try some more prying.

I had a stuck one - on the dowels - and when one side freed up, it broke off the other side as it swung away, because the other was still stuck. I had to buy a bell.

I suggest putting a couple of bolts back, loose a half inch to control the removal.

I did exactly that just in case everything came apart in a hurry.

My bell housing was stuck exactly where the starter motor was. I think the top bolt on mine went thru to the bell housing and as soon as I had that out prying easily parted the bell housing from the engine.

The started motor itself was not caught on the flywheel as it was disengaged.

John and Robert,

Thankyou for the support. I got it off.

I was the dowel pins. They were really stuck.

Also I took weight off the engine AND transmission to better align them and take all the weight off of the transmission,

After getting the right side off I heeded the warning and put a backing bolt back in to avoid breaking the bell and went after the left side.

After pounding a screwdriver in and prying little by little, the trans came free.

Now my work really starts and I'll be back on the forum for sure.

Thanks for the guidance, Jeff Hereford, Maryland, USA

Thats good news.

What exactly is wrong with your transmission?

I have just rebuilt mine and will soon know whether I did it correctly or not.

Hi John,

The transmission goes into drive and the vehicle only moves a little bit even if I rev it up.

It will not go up any grade at all. Same in reverse.

I tried new fluid and filter, no change.

Now I have to decide how to proceed. I'm considering buying a used one for $450 from a guy in Allentown, Pennsylvania.

Did you do the work rebuilding yours? Serious surgery.

Yes I did.

Not complete yet as I have to finish filling with fluid and then run JLR SDD to do adaptations.

Almost at the point of truth as to whether what I have done works or not!

There is a whole thread on the rebuild:

I coat the hollow dowels with anti seize compound before reassembly. The next guy will thank you.

Exclamation Desperate for HELP

Anyone know where I can purchase Bell Housing Bolts? Maybe someone knows the information on the bolts and can lead me in the right direction to purchase them. Theyve been discontinued here in the US

Just buy some grade 8.8 or better (or metric equivalent) bolts in the same size and pitch. No reason they need to be from jaguar

What happened to the original bolts?
They are NOT single-use fasteners.

M10 common bolts, Never measured the length.
