Default Secondary tensioner replacement

Just about to change out secondary tensioners at 95k miles on my xkr x100. No documentary evidence of previous change. Cover is off and I see existing tensioner has metal centre? I thought it was all-plastic in original, see pic. Does this mean they have been changed out already. See also pic of my new ones, which look different again. Do I go ahead and change or not? Suggestions please.

Your other post indicates a 2005 XKR. If that is your car you have a 4.2 and it has the metal tensioners.

The originals in 1996 were all plastic with no spring. There then followed v2 with an internal spring and part metal construction and finally v3 with spring an all-metal construction.

Thanks guys. Pics now added. Given 2005 came with v2, are they still vulnerable and replacement recommended?
Have I bought v3, since different to v2 but still some plastic, see pic above.

You have the v3 metal body. Failure very unlikely as they have a ratchet mechanism that locks the shoe in place.

All the versions have plastic sliders, top and bottom. The ones you have already fitted might well the the same as the new ones.

Many thanks.
So, should I go to the trouble of changing out the existing ones with the v3’s i’ve already purchased?
I only have the LH (easier) side exposed at the moment.

If you can send the new ones back, then you could do that. If not, I would be inclined to fit them as it's not difficult. You can check also check the valve clearances and see if any need adjusting.

Your car has the v3 from factory, as all 4.2 engine has. And your new ones is exactly the same. v2 was only on 1999 and 2000 models I think? My 2000 XKR had v2, and they had cracked.

Thanks, so don’t need to change at all, even at 95k miles. Like chain and primary tensioner, should be good for life?

my 2002 XKR has 203,500 miles on the chain and primary tensioners. It’s a daily driver that gets exercised to the red line on every outing.
